The verdict

Poop. If a hen is pecking a fellow member of the flock, it is not to say hello. It is usually a reminder of the hen’s ranking within the flock. If it is a new member to the flock, then the chickens are likely reasserting their dominance in the flock. Removing or introducing a new chicken to the flock is a stressful time, as peck order rankings are up for grabs.

Another reason why a chicken may peck another chicken is due to nutritional deficiencies. If fed an imbalanced diet, chickens may start feather pecking, which can lead to cannibalism. If a diet is too high in energy and too low in protein, then chickens may consume their own feathers, molted feathers, or a few feathers off a lower-ranking hen. So, pecking one another has the possibility of either being a peck order or nutritional imbalance issue.
